For descriptive purposes, we used general information about age and menopause to assign the samples into groups representing pre- (< 45 years), peri- (45–55 years), and post-menopausal (> 55 years) phenotypes in women. Wilcoxon tests were used to determine nominal p-values for the differences in protein concentrations across the age groups in the three data sets
